Several years ago, a scientist named Pusztai announced that rats fed on GM potatoes had stunted growth, in addition to being more vulnerable to disease. In many countries, consumers are strongly opposed to genetic modification, and in Europe many food producers have shied away from GM crops so as not to damage customer confidence. Such producers have realized that for consumers, the simple presence of a food product on the market no longer guarantees its safety, or the absence of “environmental risk.”
